Client
The George Washington University, Office of Government, International and Community Relations is responsible for the University's community outreach.
Challenge
With a history of local tensions and litigation, GW was bracing for battle over plans to add 2.2 million square feet to its urban campus. University leaders knew the long-term success of its 20-year campus plan depended on creating a new dynamic. They needed a vision, strategy, relationship building, and a spirit of partnership.
Enter Reingold
Reingold worked with GW to craft an eight-point strategy to position the University as a community asset and neighborhood partner. With an engaging website and creative campaign, we showcased GW's contributions to D.C.'s quality of life. And we formed a task force of the University's leaders to hone their messages and deliver them in a consistent and compelling way. Then we inspired GW to lead with its vision—not its litigators. We relieved public anxiety about construction plans through a "Grow Up, Not Out" approach that concentrates GW's expansion within campus boundaries and preserves the neighborhood's character. We also spurred community input and collaboration—through renewed relationships with city officials and community leaders; a neighborhood partnership called "FRIENDS"; and a public relations office that instantly resolves community concerns.
Results
GW's open, transparent, community-based planning process won city approval for its 20-year campus plan—a textbook example of smart growth featuring transit-oriented, mixed-use development; safe and inviting streetscapes around a vibrant town center; new science labs and research facilities; and the preservation and restoration of historic properties. The University has earned its place as an essential anchor institution. And GW's FRIENDS association has grown from 35 to 350 members—all advocates for the intellectual, social, recreational, and cultural benefits of campus/community life.
